Uterine fibroids are tumors that grow inside the uterus. They can appear due to a number of reasons. They can cause pain in the uterus, they can cause pain during sexual intercourse, and they can cause painful periods as well, including severe bleeding when you have your period. If you have uterine fibroids, they are usually found when you have an ultrasound of your uterus. A consult with your gynecologist can help to determine if you have uterine fibroids and what can be done to treat them. Read on for a few of the treatment options that may be necessary to treat this condition.

IUD

An IUD or other medications may be used to treat the fibroids. An IUD can help regulate your hormones. Other medications such as birth control can also help with this. These are options that are less invasive to help treat the fibroids and are an option if you do not want to have surgery.

Uterine Ablation

Uterine ablation is a treatment option where the uterus lining is burned. This can be done if you have smaller fibroids, but larger ones may need to be removed. The smaller tumors can be burned from your uterus, although there is a chance that later down the road, they may return; in which case, other treatments may be necessary.

Tumor Removal

Removal of the fibroids may be another treatment option. This may be necessary for larger tumors and if you do not have multiple tumors. A tumor removal can be performed while leaving your uterus intact, which is good for those that are still in their child-bearing years and may still want to bear children.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy, which is a removal of the fallopian tubes and the uterus, may be performed to help remove the fibroids and to prevent you from being in pain any longer. You will no longer be able to bear children, and you will also no longer have a menstrual cycle. This may put your body into menopause earlier than if you hadn't undergone a hysterectomy, but the need for relief from the pain caused by the uterine fibroids may outweigh this concern.

If you have pain while on your period or heavy periods or you have pain during sexual intercourse, it could be uterine fibroids. Make an appointment with your gynecologist if you would like more information about the options for uterine fibroid treatment
